The fuel injector is just a solenoid that pulls a little metal pin in and out of a valve. Pull the pin back, fuel under pressureshoots out; pin drops back into place, no fuel.
Debris and gunk can prevent the pin from going all the way into place, so the injector leaks fuel when 'off' and sprays in too much fuel when engaged.
Pull the spark plugs - if only one plug is consistently black and the others look OK, then suspect that cylidner.
You can pull the injector out, wire the fuel pump to run, and see if the injector dribbles (engine not turning). If so, it's leaking. The next test requires actually testing the spray amount of the injector, and that can be a little tricky - spraying fuel around an engine compartment can prove hazardous to your health- leave that one to a professional.
If ALL the spark plugs look black, then it can't be a single injector. You might have a bad fuel pressure regulator sending in too much fuel, bad O2 sensor, bad AMM, or a few other things. But pull the spark plugs - they live in the engine, and will reveal many secrets.
Good luck!
