The small hose flows from the top of the radiator towards the tank, that I know for sure. Any blowby air from a blown head gasket would originate somewhere in the cylinder head and making it's way out the large hose after passing through the thermostat and on into the radiator. If you undo the bleed screw atop the thermostat, do you again get air after a bleeding? That would be a likely gathering point for air by way of the intake system, yes? I had a steady coolant leak for the longest time but couldn't figure from where. One place I did eventually notice leaking was the coolant hose (post water pump) to intake manifold connection. Then just last week I discovered that the two hoses connected to the heater valve ports inside the engine compartment were loose. Fluid had been making it's way inside the cabin through the rubber seal around those valve connections. Previous to then I noticed a consistent certain loss of coolant. Over the week since tightening up the hose clamps I've not noticed a reduction.
