The timing Chain is not adjustable. It is tensioned by the chain tensioner. Underneath the valve cover there is a timing chain guide to keep the chain in place. Yes, it *could* be a worn chain guide.

Step one - get an automotive stethescope, or make one. I use a couple of feet of garden hose - any hose about 1 inch in diameter or so. Hold one end to your ear, move the other end around the engine compartment. This will localize the sound. A ticking running at engine speed can be
noisy fuel injector
worn fuel damper
sticky lifter
defect on an accessory drive belt
nick in an accessory pulley (alternator, AC condensor, water pump, etc)

And yes, something in the timing chain area. If you localize the sound to under the valve cover, at the belt end of the engine (near the firewall), then it could be a lazy lifter, slightly loose chain, or worn chain guides.

For lazy lifters, quite often an oil change will help. Some folks recommend using a thin oil treatment, like Marvel Mystery Oil, but I don't use them. I live with lazy lifters.
A trick for the chain - turn the engine backwards a couple of turns. The chain is tensioned by a chain tensioner, that steps out a little foot in discrete steps. The tensioner may be just about to retension the chain some, just hasn't had enough slack to do so. Turning the engine backwards puts just a little slack into the chain for a second or so, enough time for the tensioner to retension.

You don't mention the year or engine type (that info ALWAYS helps). The chain tensioner was redesigned in 1988. If you have the old style, install a new style tensioner.

Lastly, it may be a worn chain guide. The next time the valve cover is off to replace a leaky valve cover gasket, replace the upper chain guide. At the sam time you can inspect the chain for wear.

Mostly, I just live with the ticking at idle.

Good luck!
