Timing Chain Too Short???

I'm stumped. Started my 900S head replacement today (first time shadetree 900 mechanic). Mostly went as expected until I tried to connect the timing chain & the cams. I came up too short - that's the chain I speak of. The chain will go over one sprocket and just get over the other cam shaft. The tensioner has been removed. I expect the chain might have jumped the crankshaft sprocket and hopefully theres some excess I can roll out. Can anyone give me some insight on how to lenghten my chain? Also - two other inquiries. About how tall should a shaved down 27mm socket (for the crankshaft nut)be from the rachet to tip? And lastly - I've tried about everything to get those two 8mm bolts back on in front of the engine (timing chain side). Any suggestions or do they really need to go back? Thanks in advance for your feedback!
