head gasket master advice please

It's that time of year - I'm talking head gasket job! The symptom came fast - cylinder misfiring under boost (82T900) coupled with excessive steam from the tailpipe and loss of coolant. I've been able to continue driving so long as I stayed off the gas pedal. I already have the replacement gasket. For practice I spent the day in a scrap yard removing the head from an 84 8V. Fairly straight forward and I don't anticipate a problem. What I did notice about both the head gasket on the 84 and the replacement gasket I'll be fitting to my car is that the coolant channel holes along the top side are restricted in size compared with the actual opening on the cylinder block and head. I can only assume this is by design. Is this standard for a turbo 900? Would there be any benefit by way of a cooler head if those holes in the gasket were enlarged? Has anyone ever done that? Any other tips? Much thanks in advance.
