Underneath the console just forward of the shift lever is a mechanism designed to provide the detents to the shifter (ie clean alignment to the gates). There is a small spring that is prone to breakage with time and use. You can get to it if you pull the driver's seat, the console and lift the carpet on the driver's side.
This is dependent, though, on your car's exact vintage and production site as the internal (to the trans) centering mechanism was introduced during the 86 model year . If the problem suddenly appeared, it's a good bet you can fix it as above. A more complicated scenario is that your car came with an internal centering trans and a PO swapped in a non-centering trans leaving you with no detent mechanism. In this case you can always add the external one. The other scenario is that you have an internal centering box with a broken spring. A total trans teardown is needed to replace it but you could just add the external mechanism instead.
