gases cause goo to form in intake and auxilliary air valve, too. I have heard many here say to spray the valve liberally with carburetor cleaner to dissolve any goo that might have it stuck closed. Keith is right about outside temp.
If his test and/or carb cleaner have no effect on the AA valve, then I guess a new one is the cure.
I'm guessing the 2-3 second burst of engine running when you disconnected the AA valve hoses was due to engine getting air but then it was soon too much unmetered air thru those hoses (way too lean, that is) and engine died due to insufficient fuel in the mix (because what air went into those hoses from the engine bay didn't get metered by the fuel distributor-air meter.
