I got new boots from Jim at Sobstory for a decent price. The boots come with the clips that you need to seal the boots onto the axle and CV joint.
It can be done without removing the axle from the car - I did that a few weeks ago. Once you get the steering knuckle, the brake caliper, etc. off, the trick is to get the CV joint off of the axle. There's clip that needs to be opened to get the joint off. See http://www.twinsaabs.com for a good look at what it looks like. In order to get enough leverage to keep the whole drive axle from pulling out of the inner driver when I pulled the outer CV joint off, I clamped a big Vice Grips to the axle and put it behind the shock absorber.
You'll also need a tool to tighten the clamps - I got one from AutoZone for around $10.
