Interesting, Saab did a similar study about ten years ago. They concluded something similar but with a twist. Saab's study determined maximum fuel efficiency was obtained by using WOT but using as few gears as possible - I think they recommended 1,2,5 - skipping 3 and 4. It was unclear what the recommended shift points were, but shifting from 2 to 5 probably meant very near redline. I believe their explanation for using WOT was that it minimizes pumping losses, which does make some degree of sense. I shift this way in my 2-door and my 9000 quite often - I learned it in the SHO. I can't tell an appreciable difference in fuel economy, but both cars are pretty outstanding to begin with. The 9000 averages 24mpg and the 900S about 28, both in mixed highway/city driving.
