You probably have a leak, that has allowed the refrigerant pressure to fall below the level needed to keep the compressor running. Since it is hard to get a can of R12, here's how to check if the problem is in fact due to leaking coolant.

Over in the right fender well you will find the A/C receiver/dryer. Follow the hoses from the compressor and evaporator(at firewall). On top of it is the low pressure switch. Pull off the wires and connect them together. Then try your A/C and if it works, you know the problem is a leak. Don't run the A/C for too long when low as you will eventually burn up the compressor, so you can't jump these wires and expect your A/C back!!!

The leak can easily be found by putting some dye into the system and running the A/C. Dye injector kits are available at many parts stores and you may still have enough coolant in your system to distribute the dye to the leak. If the coolant has completly leaked out, you will have to have a shop recharge the system with refrigerant and some dye. I would try to find the dye kit becasue they are about $10 and the recharge will cost you $50-$100 for a shop to do it.

Either way you will probably find that the hoses are leaking. They all eventually spring pinhole leaks or start leaking at the connectors. To fix problem you can have a shop put in the hoses, and refill or do it yourself and then take it to a shop for refill. Or you can convert it to R134a and do the whole job yourself. Once the system has been taken apart for hose replacement, you should replace the receiver dryer because once the system has been opened, air will quickly attack the desicant in the rec/dryer. Also the expansion valve should be replaced as a precaution.

For the 134a switch you will have to flush out the system, replace the oil in the system with the correct oil, and put in new O-rings for a better seal. Sounds like a big project, but you can do it in a few hours. If you do decide to diy, be careful removing the hoses from the evaporator. Get a helper to hold the nut on the evaporator side firmly with a wrench as you loosen the nut on the hose. Thes nuts are tight and the evaporator spouts are very soft and can be twisted without proper support. Also make sure you tighten all the connections upon reassembly. The hose connections to the receiver dryer come to a "hard stop" when tight...before the "hard stop" they will leak even thought they seem tight.
