I went to the dealer this morning to have an alignment done. They assured me on the phone yesterday and when I came in this morning that they could do an alignment to the specs I gave them, which were:
Minimum Toe, Maximum Caster (2.3-2.6deg), and negative Camber (-0.5deg at each wheel)
Well, after they checked the alignment on the car, the guy came out and told me that he didn't want to set camber negative, and there was no reason to maximize the caster. He said my outside edge tire wear was because of the toe (left was at 0.26deg, right at 0.25deg), and that setting negative camber wouldn't make a difference. I begged to differ, and we went back and forth a few times. Essentially he refused to do a negative camber, even though he couldn't give me a good reason why not. He assured me that my tire wear problem would be corrected by fixing the toe. I argued a bit more with him about wanting the negative camber, but finally gave up as he just kept saying "it doesn't matter"...I did convince him to set it to zero, which is the minimum Saab spec. He also insisted that caster didn't matter, except that the right side should be more than the left.
Here are the specs I left with, $98 later:
- Toe, 0.13deg each side (I believe this is the minimum)
- Caster, 1.6deg left, 2.2deg right (I believe the differential is correct to account for the crown of the road?)
- Camber, 0deg left, 0.1deg right
Also, the rear end, which he claimed to be non-adjustable (is this right?), has a slight negative camber (-0.5deg left, -0.3deg right) and a below spec toe (0.08deg left, 0.07deg right)
I'm more than a little annoyed that they couldn't just set it the way I asked them to. I guess I'll watch the outside edges of the tires. What do you guys think?
Oh, and by the way, it took them 4 hours to do this. I'm realizing that Houston, TX may be the worst place on earth to own a C900.
