Are you sure you put the teeth of the cable in facing the right direction? As far as I can remember, they have to point towards the driver's seat to engage. The motor will stop running only when it gets a couple seconds of serious resistsnce, ie. running out of cable to pull in or push out. I greased mine like there was no tomorrow, so that shouldn't be a problem.

Try taking the antenna back out, turn the radio on (make sure the antenna motor is pugged back in),then stick the cable in the hole with the teeth facing the front of the car until you feel it hit the gears, it is only a few inches. Then, as you are holding the mast, have someone turn the radio off for you, let the gears eat up the line until it stops.
