No selected gears stay engaged well on the bench if the main side cover and detent ball and spring aren't in place. The fifth gear fork is easliy bent during installation of the lower input gear if the back side of it isn't properly meshed in the 5th gear synchro cone. I did this once but the symptom was intermittent grinding (LOUD!) at idle or in any gear except fifth as the tips of the teeth on the synchro cone brushed those on the gearwheel. I could not discern the deformation in the damaged fork after removal so it was just a few thousanths. Have you examined the main selector shaft to see if the ridges that form the detent mechanism aren't worn or damaged? Another place to look for damage is the fifth gear selector shaft itself. This kind of damage could occur in a collision.
