I've used a K&N in the open air but covered it with an amsoil foam element...use the stock amsoil foam element, remove it from the steel mesh support and stretch it over the K&N (non-cone) filter. This way you never have to clean the K&N filter and the amsoil foam is a LOT easier to clean/reoil. OTOH, the amsoil foam will break down in the heat from the engine compartment in about 5-7 years but they'll send you a new one if you call and complain about it.
I currently use an amsoil filter element in the stock air cleaner canister...yes the canister IS an intake restriction, but only above 4K rpm at full throttle. I doubt if it restricts hp output although it may restrict turbo spool up/slow it down a little. I still have 17-18 psi boost and I don't have to clean the airfilter. Car still turns 6200rpm at around 125mph (against the rpm limiter, automatic trans) which is about as fast as it can go with the stupid automatic.
