Hi, Freddie

I installed the AID in my '87 900T during summer of 2000. (The installation story I posted has scrolled off the Saabnet now, but let me know if you want it and I'll repost it.) It was relatively easy to put in.

I really love what it did for my car's performance. I was actually able to pin the boost needle beyond the redzone without knock or boost twitch, thanks in part to the AID. I adjusted my wastegate so that now my maximum boost is about 3/4 redzone, and I rarely go there... in fact, I'm putting in a new SPG9 oversized clutch and lightened matched flywheel next week to be able to use that extra HP. My stock clutch just can't hang on at the higher torque the engine can now produce.

The AID not only provides a smoothly tapered boost advance, but it allows about 6 degrees of additional initial retard. My engine is now timed at 22 degrees BTDC, rather than 16 degrees, and it runs very smoothly there. It gets better fuel economy now than it did when new, 15 years ago.

There's a huge difference in boost performance, however. Instead of just clicking in a certain amount of ignition advance when manifold pressure goes positive (that's what the stock unit does) the AID provides a smooth transition, gradually increasing advance with boost pressure, and the range of advance/retard is greater. If your APC and fuel system are up to it (I went with the SPG9 RRFPR and oversized injectors, plus their Stage II APC box) you can boost safely into the redzone without knock.

Do a search on this board for "SPG9 AID" or "SPG9 upgrades" and read the posts. To get you started, you can read this one I wrote back in November 2000 about some of the upgrades I did. I definitely think the AID is worth every dollar I paid for it. The cars should have been designed with one, instead of with the clunky vacuum advance can we got as original equipment!
