It might also be that the actuator slider mechanism in the lid has corroded and won't let the motor move the slider.
Pop off all of the plastic quarter-turn fasteners on the vinyl cover on the inside of the hatch. The actuator is in a thing that looks like a large, black sardine can. Take the cover off and you'll see the motor and the rest of the mechanism. In my '88, I ended up cleaning off as much of the corrosion on the aluminum as I could and lubed it with oil. It worked well after that.
