Timing Belts are found only on the V6 engines. They MUST be replaced every 30K miles or so.
Timing chains are another matter. There is NO recommended service interval. They are only replaced 'on condition' - that is, if they wear. In a car where the oil is changed frequently (3K miles) and regularly, the timing chain can last well over 200K. There are cases where a chain will wear or fail earlier, either due to manufacturing defect or poor maintenance.
A sign of a wearing timing chain is noise from the chain end of the engine (near the firewall in a 900). HOWEVER - DO NOT diagnose a timing chain on noise alone. There are many things that make noise that aren't the chain. The proper way to diagnose a chain is to remove the valve cover and visually inspect the chain for wear. There are also timing marks on the cams/head - if they don't line up, it shows wear in the chain. Valve covers come off to replace the gasket every few years, so it's a great time to insepect.
I have or have had 6 Saabs that had over 100K miles. None has ever had a timing chain problem. I've inspected the chains on occasion when I've replaced a leaky valve cover gasket, and the chains look fine. And a few of these cars are pretty rattly, but it isn't the chain.
Hope this helps.
