I'll try to answer your questions. I know that a dash from a pre '87 will not work....at least not well. Ask me how I found this out.

Anyway...It is not a hard job and well worth the time.

To get the dash out of the junker
1) remove 4 long fascia screws
2) remove radio box
3) pull fascia away from dash
4) disconnect all wires (Now is not a bad time to check stuff out to see how it all works and fits together)
5) remove speaker grilles
6) remove screws under speaker grills
7) remove two screws underneath the glove box (in the indention under glove box)
8) pull dash away.

You may want to take the steering wheel off before you do all this. Loosen the nut enough so there is room for the wheel to loosen but....DON'T take the nut all the way off until you loosen the wheel...otherwise it may hit you in the face when it does let loose!

I've found two good dashes for $100-$125. I would start lower. If the yard doesn't specialize in SAAB's they don't know how valuable an uncracked dash is to a person who owns an old 900.

Installation in your car is not hard. Take your time and label everything and make notes on which wires go where. Check out the Townsend website for good instructions. It is on the technical pages under cabin ventilation I believe. Since you have to remove the dash to get at that fan that's why it's under that section. They are a sponser here so there should be a link.

I've done this twice and getting ready to do it again because I tried an old pre-'87 dash in my '94T-conv. and I'm not happy with the fit. It's close but on a car that is otherwise close to perfect it's not good enough. So....It's coming out and another good dash is going in from a more recent model.

The best tip is to just take your time...keep track of all the screws and buttons. When you reconnect the heater control rod attach it to the control knob end first then as you push the fascia back in place work it onto the heater valve. If you do it after everything is back in place you may break your fascia. When the fascia is out make sure to repair the tubes on the back that the screws run through. They are always broken. I use some JB weld and drinking straws to replace severely broken or missing tubes. Also make sure you label the long screws in order of removal from left to right. It sucks trying to figure out which one goes where. I disconnect the negative battery cable for saftey...but both of my 900's have airbags...you don't have to worry about that.

Hope this helps.....

Email me if you have any questions along the way.
