to check rotor, do what you said and put a stationary object(jackstand) right next to the rotor, and you can see any warpage. But if you can feel vibes in steering wheel when braking, I'd just buy new rotors. I think sobstory has a special on them.
To check ball joints, jack up wheel with spacers between upper control arms and body opening. this relieves pressure from joints. then squeeze balljoints vertically with a big channel lock pliers and pry sideways with a big screwdriver/prybar. Any visible movement, they're bad. Do the tie rod ends the same way, but once they start to go, they deteriorate fast and slop is pretty obvious. If you find a bad part, i'd do the whole works and have a fresh start. While you're at it inspect sway bar end bushings, if visibly distended, get yourself a set of urethane bushings...big difference in turn-in quickness.
Also inspect control rod bushings and mounts for looseness. Check carefully for any cracks in lower control arms near inner mounts.
