Manually shifting the automatic like you describe is okay and won't hurt the transmission. Revving the engine in neutral and shifting to drive with the RPM's up will indeed damage the car. Becareful downshifting though. Sounds like your folks got you the perfect car for a teenager - slow and safe. Don't worry, it could be worse. When I was 16, I got to drive a 61 Dodge with a push button automatic. Save your money, study hard and in a few years, you can use the Saab as the base for building a rally car complete with 5 speed and turbo.
