If you pull the console that is between the seats out and adjust the linkage that connects gear shifter with the auto trans you might just be set. I think it sounds like the cable is slipping and not allways being where the shifter indicated.
to pull the console
1. pull plastic shifter cover - contains the letters P R N D 2 1
2. pull the two screws - under shifter cover
3. pull up upper console - switch undernieth may need to be disconected
4. pull screws holding the under part of console - under gear shifter cover
5. pull screws that are under ash tray (back of console for backseat access)
6. pull screw directly behind key slot.
you may need to pull out your seat - 4 bolts and a wire that connects for heated seats is all you should have.
now pull up carpeting around where the shifter is located. look under the base of shifter and you should see the linkage.
Proper adjustment is when car is in N and white mark is linded up with the black mark on plastic housing
