The head gasket design for the 2.1L was updated after the production ended, so just about all 900s with the 2.1L (91-93) will need the updated head gasket sometime in their life, but will not need one after that. I paid around $550 to have the one on mine ('91 900) replaced.
I think these are extremely reliable cars. The brakes are the newer design brakes from the 9000 series, the engine management system is the 2.4.2 system which has very minimal maintenance requirements, the car also has ABS and an air bag, which I find very nice additions to the car.
I believe I've read that the manual transmission was also beefed up considerably in '91 to address pinion bearing failures common in the older models.
All in all, I find my '91 very, very reliable, even at its present 139K miles. I have no doubt it will easily go 200K miles. And the 2.1L provides a lot more power than the 2.0L... it seems like a small change but it is very noticable!
