I gutted mine. It does sound better, and did noticeably improve torque (climbs the hill I live on in 4th @ a steady 2500, whereas before I HAD to go to 3rd.) However, I have seen posts here and on other car sites claiming that to get the best performance, you need to run a straight pipe thru the middle of the cat. A gutted cat is similar to a double necked bottle, which doesn't flow very well. The wider body of the cat allows gas to expand, which then backs up when having to go back into the narow outlet.
