Mark,
I have an old 8V SAAB and the injectors are still good. I haven't ever replaced mine, but I have replaced their seals. I think the injectors are really long-lasting, from what I hear. I would test them to see if they're clogged or have a bad spray pattern. To do that:
1. Make sure engine is cool. DON'T SMOKE DURING THIS TEST!
2. Remove the two (5mm?) Allen bolts which hold the injector hold-down plates onto the intake manifold. Be careful, don't lose the washers!
3. Carefully withdraw the injector pairs still attached to the fuel lines(fuel lines age and get brittle, so don't bend too far!) and place them in a bucket/some container resistant to gasoline to catch the gas released when testing them.
4. Loosen the 2 worm clamps at each end of the rubber bellows which connects the airflow meter to the throttle valve housing. Remove bellows.
5. Open up the fusebox, remove the fuel pump relay, and jumper terminals 30 & 87, preferably with a switched & fused jumper wire. Haynes & Bentley manuals have diagram of which terminals are 30 & 87. (You don't need to turn on the ignition.) You should hear the fuel pump run and the Lambda modulating valve located on the driver's side inner fender should buzz.
6. Using pliers or a strong magnet, lift the airflow sensing plate. (The higher the plate is lifted, the more fuel will flow to the injectors.)
7. Check the injector spray pattern. A nice spray pattern is conical & even. A bad pattern is lopsided or maybe only a trickle, if injector is really clogged.
8. If injectors don't spray well, lift the plate as far up as possible (don't bend anything!) and you just might be able to flush out the crud.
9. Also, check to see if the injectors leak: Lower the airflow plate, take out the jumper wire (to shut fuel pump off), and wipe the injectors clean. Then, lift the airflow plate. No fuel should drip from them (keep an eye on 'em for 15 minutes).
If injectors don't respond to the wide-open method to clean them out, or if they leak appreciably, then replace them. Hope this helps!
