slow heat-up sounds like the t-stat is stuck open a bit, change to new 82C if hot climate. pressure test and fix any leaks.
although many think they are more competent at eng'g than saab engineers were for over 10 years related to the c900, the saab design is fine ... gage swings to 2/3 or 3/4 when fan comes on, normally runs at 50% on hi way. This is typical for about 99% of all oem designs, it's just that other oems either don't have a gage, or use a nonlinear gage that stays at one normal place, as coolant temps swing thru normal 15-20F range between t-stat open point and fan on point.
saab rads do get plugged and go bad ... and gage will read higher, 7/8+, before fans kick with oem switch.
replace coolant every 2 years. replace t-stat and test sys pressure every 4 years or so.
