I did the mod on my 82T 8V - incorporating the 16V top left fender version. What I like about if is the larger diameter, less restrictive design. If you do simply use a shortened tube, consider the heat issue. A tube which opens near the bottom of the engine compartment is preferable to any opening inside the engine compartment. That of course is during warm weather driving. In the winter you might want to draw the warmer air from inside the engine bay. I wouldn't worry at all about any water from rain being drawn into the system if you have a tube pointed toward the bottom. Your engine can handle a little water - ie the water injection systems for turbo-charged engines. It would have to be a major rain for there to be any noticable problem. Then the question would be, "What the heck were you doing driving in that weather to begin with?"
