There might be better (or other) suggestions by others, but I'll chime in with my two cents:

1. You might want to check the oxygen sensor preheater circuit. The white wires to the O2 sensor should supply 12 volts or so when connector unplugged & measured on the car's connector end & the engine is running. If no voltage is present, then that might be your problem. I think in '85 the fuse for that circuit was on the wiring itself and that by '86 (yours) they moved the fuse to the main fusebox. If it does supply 12V, then your O2 sensor's internal heating element might have gone bad, read on... (the preheater warms up the sensor when the car is first started--before it normally would get hot--to monitor fuel/air mixture sooner, leading me to think that's a plausible cause for your cold engine/poor running).

To check preheater, keep O2 sensor's white wires disconnected, and this time measure the O2 sensor's lead with an ohmmeter. You should get about 4 ohms. Infinite resistance means the heating element is dead, and that is probably causing your cold acceleraton problem.

2. Timing is checked by shining any timing light through the little window in the black plastic flywheel/clutch cover. It is on the top of the plastic cover, facing the radiator, is a rectangular slot next to a small circular hole there, just below the intake manifold.
