Check engine light is a definite sign that something is amiss. One thing to check is the stored diagnostic codes. Follow the link below for the procedure for retrieving the codes. The codes may give some insight (although they will probably just indicate something to the effect of "mixture out of range".)
What color are the porcelains on the spark plugs? Black? Tan? White?
The O2 sensor could be bad, especially if it's never been changed. How many miles on the car? When was the last tuneup?
