The job isn't a bad one, but I'd make sure I didn't have a full tank of gas (could be a bit messy!). Try to drive it until the tank is about 1/2 full.
Also, I found the pre-pump job to be pretty well easy. You might want to put the rearmost floorboard section section back in, to have a place to sit and not have to kill your back and knees leaning over/kneeling on the rear bumper! (I wish I'd done that, looking back...)
I've linked Larry West's step-by-step pre-pump fix page below; he has full color pics of the whole operation! (Again, I wish I'd had seen that when I did mine!)
When I did the pre-pump on my '84 S, it was below freezing, one Dec. evening (outside, no garage). Plus, the pseudo-informative Haynes manual I had did nothing but confuse the heck out of me. It didn't even have a diagram of the pre-pump type setup ('83 onward?), just the 1979-83 one-pump-does all setup! Aggravating! I was thoroughly confused before I removed my pump. Then I wanted to shoot someone at Haynes!
Did your new pump come with the filter sock? You might need one. I didn't know about eEuroparts.com or SAABsite.com or any of these specialty SAAB parts dealers. I did the only thing I knew and ordered a pre-pump and filter from Advance Auto Parts in my town.
One more recommendation: Get a flexible 1/4" driver handle (looks like a screwdriver w/a spring-mounted on the end and 1/4" driver tip on the end of that). It would've helped my job IMMENSELY! I had to get at the rubber boot's clamp with an awkward 90 deg. angle screwdriver. Bad idea.
Larry West's procedure calls for a 1/4" (solid) driver handle and a 1/4" universal joint. That would work OK, if you have that and don't have the 1/4" flexi driver. (But a flex type would make a great tool addition!)
Hope this helps!
