oil cooler. Turbo only?

doing some more modifications on the 87' 900T and discovered that the oil cooler is temperature-activated. I want to know if it would be okay to remove the temp-sensor that stops oil from getting to the cooler until high temps and have it open all the time. will this cause any problems?
the engine from this car is already disassembled for rebuild, so i'm not worried about "all the work involved" taking the oil filer-housing out.
also, were oil coolers only installed on turbo models? and, has any one ever installed one on a 900S? any results? just wondering.
