A few possibilities,
on the key being stuck: It could be that the key lock (I don't know what it's really called) is stuck or broken. You know if the car is a 5 speed that the car must be in reverse to take the key out. It is possible that that mechanism is somehow stuck in the position so that it doesn't allow you to remove the key, even while in reverse. Take it from me, Don't break the key off in there trying to force it, I learned that one the hard way.
As to the car not starting: If you've ever not had the car start on the first turn of the key, you know that you must turn the ignition all the way off, and then back on, to try to start the car again. I suppose it is a mechanism so that you don't acidentally grind the starter. When you turn to from the run position to the start position (where if you let go of the key, it would spring back to the run position) does it feel like it turns far enough? For example: If I tried to start the car and it failed to take, and then I tried again to start the car (without doing the "all the way off first) the key will not turn quite as far. I hope what I am saying makes a shred of sense, it's kind of hard for me to explain. But, this would be one explaination for why you would get everything else to turn on except the engine.
I'm not a mechanic or anything, but from my experiences with my car (1990 900 Turbo Convertible) these are the simple things that could cause a problem. I am sure others on the board will give more well informed opinions.
Good luck. I know how frustrating all these problems can be. Most times it is something simple. Don't freak out until you know otherwise.
