Rear seal R &R, made special tool

To install the rear main seal in close quarters, I used a 5/8" threaded rod, about 8" long with double nuts on one end, a lrge washer, another nut, and an oil filter socket that would fit the diameter of the rear seal, over 3-1/2" ID. This is the type of oil filter wrench that fits over the end of the filter, like a cup. I drilled a hole in the filter socket for clearence of the dowel pin. It drew the main seal up evenly. Then I put a smaller solid spacer against the end of the crank, used the same set-up without the filter socket, and drew in the clutch shaft seal. Made a simple job out of 2 tough installations.
I would have preferred to use a bearing inner ring for the rear main driver. The thicker wall would stop the seal flush with the engine housing, then install the clutch seal in one operation. However, my local electric motor shop did not have the correct size in their scrap pile.
I am very upset, that the usual excellence in engineeringing for Saab, does not show for their seal applications. Most manufacturers would either machine a shoulder into the housing to serve as a stop for the seal, or use a snap ring. In this instance, if the tool outer diameter is not larger than the seal, you can keep pushing until the seal goes all the way through. I hate when they leave out small features like that.
