I usually tell my customers it is a good idea to start with a master cylinder that has not yet failed. If you can pick up a good used one on the cheap, rebuild it. Both the clutch and brake master cylinders are realatively easy to rebuild. The brake master may have a tricky little pin under the reservoir seal that will need to be pulled in order to remove the inner piston.
