Regarding wattage and crap sounding amps. I would only argue that in my experience there is a difference with larger wattage amps where distortion, or lack thereof, is concerned. Previous to getting a 500 watt system to power the front 4" set plus the rear 10" twins, I powered a set of 8" Infinity's and the front set with the head unit only (200 watts max, or 50x4). There was a definite limit with regards to volume and distortion, or when the bass end crapped out. Now with the 500 watt unit, and the 8"s having been replaced by two 10" (previously sub) woofers, there is no crapping out regardless of the volume. And it's not a very expensive amp either. It's the underpowered sub speaker which now craps out first! (a mono bridged 300 watt max amp really ain't all that much juice for a speaker rated at 900 watts) Mind you, the system has to be turned up considerably loud for that to happen. With some songs/cd's that are especially bass heavy it is noticable even at a moderate loud level.

There's also a vibration factor that I have to address with the 10"s and 12" sub mounted on the rear deck. I stiffened it up with a 1/4" layer of stiff pressed board prior to cutting the holes, but I can tell the edges are in need of stiffening. For that I'm thinking of using a fiberglass mix - a miracle all-purpose compound I'm very familiar with.
