Need help installing check valve in fuel line!

My long cranking-before-starting problem has been identified on my 90S.
There is no check above my fuel pump, just a 90 fitting. I purchased the correct part from eEuro, orings, etc. Now that I have removed the old, I am finding the plastic fuel line is very stiff & doesn't want to co-operate to insert the new barbed fitting. I think PO replaced fuel pump & seem to remember a change of pump which original had the check built in? ??
Tried boiling water to soften plastic line, no improvement. I know Bentley shows a clamping system (special tool) which of course I don't have.
Next plan - 5/16" tubing flaring block to hold line, try to force new check valve into it with channel locks. This scares me a bit, seems like the check valve (plastic) probably won't take too much force.
Option plan - remove fuel line from filter to fuel pump & replace with conventional F.I. fuel hose & clamps. Has anyone done this? Fuel tank must drop enough to swap lines.
Looking for some wisdom & experience.
TIA,
DET
