Q about measuring APC pots

My APC has been tuned by a mech in the past. Before I solder in "red box" resistors I wanted to verify the existing F and P settings. Board is apart and I'm measuring from the two prongs soldered in the back of each pot on the board. My trouble is I can't get a clean number. It jumps around all over the range for each pot when I "feather" the leads, but when I hold them steady on the prongs it only reads 0.3 ohms. Is there a magic method of getting a stable reading from these? I assume I don't put one lead on the screw portion of the pot since it's covered in the anti-vibration green film.
Thanks for any insight.
