Well the '85 900t was due, so what the hell. Convert to R134a.
Bought a hose set, exp. valve, and receiver/dryer. The compressor looked 'clean' without much oil residue near the clutch.
So I replaced the above items. And found that the expansion valve had a broken capilary tube. Would this explain why the system had no freon in it? Following Monsters lead everything went has planed. Down to the crud under the windshield washer resevoir.
The tough part of this whole operation was converting the r12 hose fittings over to r134a fittings. The first time I put the fitting on (non-GM type) I crushed the shrader valves all around. So off to get new valves for the converter fittings and find a tool long enough to get the SAAB hose valves out. Who knew! Pull the compressor off. Could not drain a lick of oil out of it. Nada. So I put 6oz into and moved on.
Then I had to convert my dad's manifold and vacuum pump. So much for standards. Another pain in the ass.
Bottom line: pay someone X dollars to pull a vacuum for you.
Got a 23-24in-hg vacuum pulled and started to put one can into the system. No problem. Car running, AC button on. No clutch.
Check for voltage, none. Check for continuity on frost, low pressure, and high temp; all good. Open up relay in fuse panel. Manually close relay, clutch works. Wires good.
Look in Bentely for wiring diag. Notice a trottle switch. Yup, you guessed it, connector broken right off. Jump wires. We have clutch. Leave first can on. I can get the system down to 50F(ambiant80F). The sight glass looks like your looking out a plane window in a cloud bank. Contaminants? Pull the first can off and it weights about the same as my unopened can. What gives? If I pull the first can off the filler hose it just dumps whats left into the air. Should I just put the second can on or do I have something else going on here?
If I hook my manifold upto the high & low side of the compressor what am I looking for in a healthy 17 year old system?
TIA,
Ed S
