The clamping force (wheel-to-hub) that you get by tightening depends on the torque and the thread size & pitch. Not the size of the hex-head of the bolt. That means use the same torque. I imagine the wheels themselves have to be able to tolerate that force, or else they shouldn't be used on the car anyway...
A 6-point socket should be a bit stronger, but that's all about breaking the socket. Torque is the same.
BTW, our '01 9³ has five lug bolts, with 17mm heads. I guess they wanted to use smaller holes, too.
