You're talking about the E-brake cables? Posted by RS [Email] ![]() ![]() ![]() In Reply to: Safety Brake, Christian, Mon, 29 Apr 2002 08:43:36 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
I see that you're up in the great, white, salty North. Your cables are probably rusted and don't work quite right.
You can get rear cables from Sobstory or http://eeuroparts.com for about $30 each.
When I replaced the cables on my '88, it took me a few hours. My procedure:
Jack up rear end, and place jackstands at strategic locations. Use wheel chocks in front of and behind front wheels.
Remove front seat. You need to remove it to get the console off.
Remove rear seat bottom cushion. It makes it easier to get the cable under the carpet.
Remove center console.
Undo the long nuts on the cables where they go into the lever assembly.
Then remove the plastic clip that holds both cables benind the lever.
There's a metal clip under the carpet, about 6 inches behind the rear of the console. It has a Torx screw and secures the cables to the floor. Undo this.
Under the car, it's pretty obvious how the cables attach to the calipers and trailing arms.
Installation is pretty much the reverse of removal. But, depending on the style of cable that you're removing, you may have to trim some of the rubber off of the cables so they fit where they enter the console assembly. One tricky part of the re-assembly is getting the rubber grommets to seat in the holes in the floor. The second one will be easier than the first.
The parking brake does the self adjusting for the rear brakes. Your existing calipers may have a self-adjusting machanism that has some corrosion in it and they don't adjust. Rebuilt calipers are the answer. See the two places above for calipers and pads.
