From what I read, 89 had some ECU (computer/brains) problems, and that's not a cheap part to replace.
The key is miles, maintenance history, and a good mechanic's inspections before purchase. Watch for transmission problems. I'd stick to 90 or newer, but if you find a total cherry 1988 or something, don't rule it out.
Transmissions are not a strong point on the 900, but the automatics were supposed to be worse than manuals. I've never owned an automatic car of any make, so I don't know first hand.
As for starting on your own DIY saab work... Get a Bentley Manual to go along with your Saab and start with simple things - oil changes, minor services, etc. With that book and this web site you'll be able to troubleshoot, repair, and maintain quite a few things!
Good luck!
