Julian,
I too am not mechanically inclined, but i'm beginning to learn, and trying to take care of things myself. I just ordered (but haven't received yet) the Bentley manual, which explains step-by-step how to repair things. I think fault diagnosis will be the most difficult part of the equation, but the knowledge and help you'll receive at this site is AMAZING!! Also, the townsendimports site has TONS of step-by-step technical stuff!
Next week i will be attempting my first tune-up on my own. With the above suggestions regarding your own situation, take a shot and inspect what they say. If you find it, GREAT, if not, THEN take it to a mechanic. Especially with the above, it doesn't seem like a big time investment and it's worth a shot.
Sure, sometimes (ok, often) i screw up and get frustrated, but when things go right, i get a tremendous feeling of self accomplishment. Just wait until you solve something by yourself in 15 minutes, then realize a repair shop would charge you 1 hour of labor to do the same, and you'll be attempting much more on your own.
Give it a shot and Good Luck.
