Mechanical Advance

Hi, I have a 86 900 turbo. I was told by a Saab mechanic who checked the timing that there was no mechanical advance happening. Reading some earlier postings on the bulletin board, the mech advance seems to be electronically done, ie there is no counterweights in the distributor body, is this also true of an 86 model? What is strange is that the mechanic who did the tune up did not offer a remedy for the lack of mechanical advance..thanks for any help.
