AC condensor variations

From a 1987 C900 scrap yard donor car I pulled an AC condensor to replace the original 82 condensor because of stripped threads on the high pressure side hose fitting, stripped when I unscrewed it to replace the leaking hose. While the two condensors were the same physical size and had the same connections, the 87 condensor was a different design than the 82. The 87 had a more complex pattern of tubes rather than the flat ribbon 82 design. When I compared the two, the 87 version with it's more dense pattern of tubing looked to be more restrictive in terms of air flow. Air passing through the condensor passes on to the coolant radiator. A more effective AC condensor the 87 version may be, but common sense tells me that the engine cooling system comes first on the priority list. It's bad enough that the air necessary to cool the engine is first warmed up as it passes through the condensor (when the AC is on), a more restrictive design whether the AC is on or off makes little sense. I ended up taking an exact duplicate of the 82 version, but from a 1986 donor car.

Can anyone explain or defend the more restrictive condensor design?
