Transmission fluid is splashed against this seal frequently while driving, and a few months ago, mine was not replaced properly when i had a slave cyclender replaced. as a result, it let most of the tranny fluid out in a very short time. if yours goes bad all of a sudden, you could be driving around on a dry tranny. since i had a rebuilt tranny last summer, i am very kind to it and would replace it asap. i'm not sure how much is acceptable seepage, but when mine let go, the only thing i saw was a very large puddle below the car, good thing i saw it!
so if it's normal seepage, you might be alright, if they're saying it needs replacement soon, i would do it sooner, rather than later.
