From all I've read here, when passive belts start to act up, the only reasonable (read: safe) solution is to replace them (though, having said that, search the board for "passive", etc. in case I've missed something). This is apparently a very expensive proposition, however.

If you want to troubleshoot, Bentley manual has a wiring diagram and brief description; perhaps it's something simple?

There is a Saabnet FAQ for replacing passive belts with a standard 3-point belt system - check it out. You might also try locating a used passive system - if it's mechanical, perhaps the parts from a donor car's (little-used) passenger side will fit the driver side?

I'd avoid getting belts from a car that's been involved in a front-end collision. IIRC the belt material is single-use only, designed to stretch to absorb some of the impact of your catapulting carcass as it's stopped by the belt. No way of knowing the belts' condition (unless there's a hole the size of a head in the windshield ;-).

If you want to go completely nuts, you might look for a wrecked 1991-93 hatchback with the same color interior as yours. Grab the rear interior side paneling, which will be pre-cut with standard belt slots; the seats, which apparently are direct bolt-in for the passive-belt seats, get rid of your now-superfluous passive lap belts, and are in better condition; the seatbelts; the headliner, which is different than your car's and will allow you to completely remove the passive belt tracks; and the "oh $h!t" handles, which SAAB stupidly omitted on passive cars.

Every once in a while, when I go to get out of my car, I realize that the belt didn't lock completely into position and I'd been driving around essentially without a shoulder belt. Scary...
