Battery Exploded - Overcharging?

Hi,
I have a '92 900, 163,000 miles.
Recently I had the crankshaft pulley, battery, and alternator replaced. After this job, 3 of my 4 headlamp filaments went out, so I suspected that the alternator may have been putting out too much juice. I took the car to my mechanic, who checked the voltage (at the battery) and said that it was fine. The headlamp thing was coincidence.
Yesterday, while driving back from NY, I began to notice a sulfur smell. Then, I hear a loud pop and see something fly out underneath my car. Pulling over in the emergency lane, I noticed that one of the battery covers had blown off. The battery also looked a bit buckled on one side.
Luckily, I made it to my mechanic's place. I left it there for him last night and have not yet called him this morning.
My question is: Do you think that this was the fault of:
a) the alternator (overcharging?)
b) the battery (faulty?)
c) some mechanism that tells the alternator to stop charging the battery (?) Where would this be anyway?
Thanks to all. This board is really a great resource.
