My guess is either fuel pump or exhaust noise. I'll address the fuel pump:
My (now parts car) '84 had the pre pump go bad and sounded like that when it went. It began acting up whenever the fuel level dropped to 1/4 tank or less because of bad pre-pump. The bad pre was starving the main pump for fuel, thus making the grinding/sucking air/buzzing noise. Does yours sound like that?
Also, a severely clogged fuel filter might have made the main pump have to pump through too much resistance, causing its (impending demise).
To check this noise and pinpoint whether or not its a fuel pump-caused racket, while the car is running and making the noise, set the parking brake, and go around to the trunk. Empty the trunk, climb inside, and put your ear to the floor. If it's a fuel pump noise, it should be loudest near the forward (front) of the two trunk floorboards, slightly towards the driver's side (USA) of the centerline of the car. That's the fuel pumps' location. You should hear a gurgling/sucking air/moaning/buzzing noise below 1/4 tank of gas (or maybe at a bit higher fuel level if car is parked on just the right incline). Hope this helps!

P.S. Larry West has a great pre-pump replacement webpage (lots of photos), which you might want to check out, just in case. I'll link it below.
