Ok Upper and lower ball joints are the things that piviot when you go over bumps. As your cars suspension goes up and down they piviot to keep your tire alignment at the same camber. If these are worn you will possiably hear some clunking noise when going over bumps. Another sign is uneven tire where. Part cost is about $80 ($20 x 4). I am a do it yourselfer and If it were me I would recomend you to get the Robert Bently Plublishers Official Saab Manual - I got my'ne off Ebay for $38. These are tremendious manuals and if you are at all mechanicaly inclined you can do anything with the aid of a manual and some acasional assistance from saabnet members. As far as some starter info to let you know what both of these jobs involve check out this do it yourselfer web site I found. It is all about how to doing both a rack and pinion and balljoints. Now one other idea. I have put some stop leak in my rack to help the leak stop. It worked for me.
I personaly have never done balljoints but I have pulled some ball joints off the lower control arms off a old car to get a control arm off. - I would guess that a ball joint job is about a 2 hr job for the novice.
Let us know what you come up with
