87 was money pit year.
175k is a lot of mileage.
You'll have a lot of stuff coming up like inner drivers and cv joints, front wheel bearings (rears seem to last a long time or fail randomly), ball joints, steering rack (new tie rod ends with new rack), radiator, prob a timing chain. The trans was replaced once at 75K and it has 100K on the rebuilt one...tells you something? How often was the trans fluid changed on the rebuilt one...should have been changed every 20-30K miles or it will have problems.
That trans has a thermostat on the trans cooler...if the thermostat fails just bypass it with some hose/clamps (although I recall seeing another configuration in the service manual using an oil/water cooler hooked up to the heater hoses). At 175K the alternator should have a new regulator installed on GP. Have the V-belts been replaced at regular intervals, is the water pump an OEM pump or has it been changed out? The A/C belt tensioner probably needs to be replaced if it hasn't been already. The oil cooler hoses may need replacement. The AIC motor may need replacement if the car idles up and down. Check the wiring on the engine harness/grounds...if the wiring is deteriorating/insulation falling off you'll have to rewire or replace the engine harness. Have the engine hoses (radiator upper and lower and heating hoses) been replaced (4 years 60K?)? Look REAL close at the body....the front fenders at the arches are prone to rusting...look underneath the car and probe if you see a lot of undercoating and it looks new. Do the front brakes CLUNK when you back up and hit the brakes (common but not a big deal..worn calipers)? Does the emergency brake hang up (the OEM ebrake cables changed about 88...a lot of the older ones are corroded and will hold the front pads on when you release the handbrake).
Service is everything on old Saabs...as you might guess the guy I bought mine from didn't do squat...and I ended up doing a lot of catchup. Once the catchup was done I've had no problems and going on 250K miles.
OTOH, I bought my 87 900T with 133K on it for $4500 in 93, I think. So $2200 sounds pretty good.
