MS,
I can sympathize with your do-it-yourself tendencies - I'm the same way. The only mechanic I trust is the one I see in the mirror every morning!
But if you don't vacuum the system properly, you WILL regret it later. No matter what you do, when you first assemble the system there will be moisture in there - it's in the air. Plus, you've got leftover solvent and so on. All these things will do no good for the system, and it's a must to get them out of there. All you want is refrigerant and oil!
The engine will NOT create nearly enough vacuum to do the job. A typical engine at idle will have a vacuum of about 20 inches of mercury. A full vacuum is 29-31 inches depending on atmospheric pressure. You need to get to within no more than an inch of that number to boil off the residual nasties in the system.
In short, you need a purpose-built vacuum pump - there's really no good substitute. Any automotive a/c shop will have one - perhaps you could just pay them to vac the system. Or if you have a used tool or surplus store around, perhaps they'd have one. Personally I was lucky to have an employer that had an extra one they gave me!
This is something you really want to do right the first time, because mistakes can bite you in really expensive ways later...
